Ippo vs Little Mac
"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee." - Muhammad Ali.
Ippo Makunochi: Hajime No Ippo's featherweight fighter.
Little Mac: Punch Out's pint sized protagonist.
Boxing. One of the most touted sports around. Having such a long history it's no wonder many pieces of fiction have chosen to adapt the art into a story or game, to watch as our hero raises the ranks fighting foes from all over the world to test their skills and become the champion. So with these two fighters in the ring and the bell ready to be rung, we'll find who will knock the other to the mat and win, in not just a boxing match, but a DEATHBATTLE...blog.
Before We Begin...
We will not scale Mac to Donkey Kong's feats from his own game for the sake of fairness and consistency. Other than that, we'll use all other Punch Out media that doesn't counter canon, so Punch Out Arm Wrestling? Sure. Super Smash Brothers? No.
Background
Ippo
Ippo Makunochi picked up boxing in order to answer one pivotal question: "What does it mean to be strong?" The sparks of that fiery question are felt throughout the whole story, as Ippo steadily becomes more and more competent in fighting, due to the assistance of his coach Kamogawa. In order to fully honor his teachings, Ippo aims to become a world champion.
Little Mac
Mac doesn't have a lot to talk about. As a 17 year old from the Bronx, he found an interest in boxing, finding a mentor in the former Heavyweight Champion Doc Louis. And after training day in and day out, he fought through the WVBA battling goliaths of men, until eventually becoming the world champion.
Experience/Skills
Ippo
Considering how long and iconic Hajime No Ippo's manga is, it's not a surprise that Ippo is incredibly skilled. He can notice minute weaknesses in an opponent, and is able to exploit vulnerabilities such as pressure points on people. Battling against a wide range of opponents, Ippo's used his crafty techniques and strategies in order to defeat foes who're much stronger conventionally.
Little Mac
Mac went through rigorous training, not even sleeping, and for as painful as it sounds, it was ultmately worth it. He's able to contend with the best boxers around the world, like the real life boxer Mike Tyson, or Mister Dream, who easily took out every other boxer in the WVBA. From martial artists to people who box with bears, Mac has seen it all, even beating people who are outright cheating. Mac usually focuses on defense, making advantage of his nimbleness to dodge the absolute beasts he goes up against.
Ippo
Peek-A-Boo Style
One of Ippo's most used techniques. It has the user maintain a low centre of gravity, having their elbows cover their stomach and boxing gloves cover their chin being great for defense.
Shoulder Block
By blocking with his shoulder and protecting more vital areas, Ippo can cut down the brunt of an attack he takes to a third.
Pressure Points
By hitting certain areas on the body, Ippo can paralyze a foe, able to make whoever's affected fall down, no matter how strong.
Little Mac
Star Punch
A powerful technique that Mac learned from Doc Louis himself. He obtains stars up to three via attacking successfully in certain situations, and the more stars he has, the stronger he'll hit
Upon drinking whatever "Giga Mac Juice" is, Mac can massively boost his physical stats, albeit at the cost of lowering his strategic nimbleness.

- Can keep up with Macho Man, who can swing around miltiple times faster than sound (Mach 5.1)

- Don Flamenco, who can punch a bull into the air (114,110 Joules)
- Bald Bull, who can get so angry his body literally steams (0.007 Tons of TNT)
- Mister Sandman, who can destroy a building (0.23 Tons of TNT)
Stats
Starting off with Ippo he's pretty safely in the Wall level range with plenty of feats to back it up, such as taking punches with the strength of a truck, or destroying a statue for 231 Kilojoules. Meanwhile, Mac can defeat the many odd boxers in Punch Out, with notable ones being Bald Bull, who's steaming can get 0.007 Tons, and Sandman, who could destroy a building for over 0.23 Tons, both getting Small Building level, though Sandman's is almost actually building level. Suffice to say, even though Ippo is far stronger than any normal person, he's not stepping up to Mac's punching power.
In terms of speed, Ippo is rather blatantly Transonic, due to keeping up with faster than eyesight opponents, and someone who could cause a sonic boom by punching. As for Mac, due to Great Tiger, he's at least 190.5 m/s, or subsonic in laymen's terms, but can get all the way up to Mach 5.1 going off of Super Macho Man's spinning. Another factor to note is Mac's light speed feats, which are obviously pretty questionable. Firstly, one of them comes from an obscure spinoff game, that while canon under our rules, might leave some heads turned due to how deep of a pull it is. Secondly is the matter of consistency. Sure, there are two feats of Mac being in tandem with light, but considering how Punch Out is about human boxers, it could be jarring to say they're that high, especially with how big of a jump it is, though this can be countered by mentioning the fact Punch Out is far from grounded, such as how some of the boxers essentially have superpowers, or how one of the feats was due to a robot monkey shooting magnetic waves at someone. Ultimately, the verdict will be considered using Mac's lower values, but light speed Punch Out certainly is a possibility.
All in all, it's safe to say Max takes round 1 in this department, due to his noticeable superiority in strength and speed.
Techniques
On Ippo's end, the Peek-A-Boo style of fighting is a highly compact boxing technique, combining offense and defense into one, and other skills he's employed such as the block, or the pressure points, could mitigate Mac's damage and paralyze him if landed. For Mac, his most notable attributes here are his Star Punch and Giga Mac form, but those may actually come at his detriment. Mac's Star Punches are unlikely to rack up due to Ippo's defense, and Giga Mac's tankier frame may leave him susceptible to paralyzing from a pressure point strike. Though Mac isn't down for the count just yet, as his superiority in stats kick in. Even if he's less nimble than normal Mac, Giga Mac would still retain his original combat speeds with an added punch, and if we take Ippo's shoulder block as literally dividing an attacks power by three, going off of the Sandman feat and halving it, it'd get roughly 0.07.6 Tons of TNT, which is still enough to damage Ippo.
Conclusions
Ippo
Advantages:
- More techniques
- Better fighter
- Pressure points
- Blocking inhibits some damage
Disadvantages:
- Weaker
- Slower
- Giga Mac/Star Punches can be devastating if not blocked
Little Mac
Advantages:
- Stronger
- Faster
- Speed gap means he's more likely to hit before Ippo blocks
Disadvantages:
- Blocks can make stuff like Giga Mac and Star Punches mute, as well as weaken Mac generally
- Mac's fighting style is more used for opponents stronger than himself
- Pressure points could negate durability
And as the final round comes to a close, one boxer's gloves hit the ground and one stands tall, through his superior strength and speed, say hello to your winner of the match...
Little Mac!
