Light "Kira" Yagami vs Jack "the Invisible Man" Griffin

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."- Lord Acton

Light Yagami: Death Note's God of the New World.

Jack Griffin: Invisible Man's  Scientist of The Impossible.

Ultimately speaking, man wants the freedom to do anything. No matter how noble they portray their goals, no matter how many people believe in them, it's shown time and time again that when man gains the abilities to do anything they desire, disaster strikes. No matter how they seem on the outside, once they can fulfill those wishes deep down, their true faces step into the light. These two have been granted such capabilities to elude consequence nigh-absolutely, which leads to the question of: what happens when two untouchable men come to blows? Will Light deduce London's most enigmatic criminal, or will Jack be the third invisible creature to bring Light's end? Let's find out in a DEATHBATTLE...blog.

Before We Begin...

This will not be like our usual blogs, so a good bit of preamble will be needed. This will be a intelligence match, although both's end goal is still to kill their opponent. Jack will begin in London and Light in Japan. Light will be as he was when he was part of the police force to catch Kira after L's death. Light will be softly composited, using both anime and manga, and Jack will use the original novel as well as the Universal Studios movie adaptation. We will assume both know of the invisible man and Kira respectively, and are actively trying to find them, although anything other than base information they'll have to figure out through investigation.

Background

Light Yagami

Light was a pretty average teen. Popular with the ladies, amazing grades, a loving family and a huge misogynist, like most boys his age. But one day he noticed a note book falling from the sky. That note book had rules inside, stating whomevers name is written in the note book will die. Light passed this off as some prank, but something about it alured him, and once testing it out on a criminal on the television he found its was all too real. The note book was, in actuality, the "Death Note", a tool used by Shinigami to take the lives of humans, with this one being dropped by Ryuk into the human world in order for him to find enjoyment outside of the bore that was the Shinigami realm. With the Death Note, Light decided to bring upon a new world, trying to kill countless criminals for a new era of peace, with the public giving him the monicker of "Kira". Meanwhile, governments all over the world wanted to figure out who this was, and the world's greatest detective L sooncame to play, figuring precisely where Kira was, and suspecting Light to be the enigma's real identity,  thus sparking the long battle of wits between the two, with Light ultimately winning. But this victory was short lived, as a new threat to Light's agenda was on the rise. L's successor Near, and Mello. Light, now running the police force L used to operate, worked with Near at first, but eventually, after Mello's death, Light was caught, and whether he died kicking and screaming or running away thinking on his past actions, Ryuk wrote Light's name in the Death Note regardless, putting a permanent end to Light's story.

 Jack Griffin

Getting his beginnings as a doctor, Jack Griffin was skilled in his trade, before coming upon an idea: invisibility. If he succeeded, such research could usher in a new age for humanity, granting militaries the capability of invisible soldiers. But in al his brilliance, Jack was paranoid, he his himself away, ensuring that not on person could know any of his research. After renting a place in secret to research without disturbance, he began experimenting. He found that he could turn cats invisible, which was already an amazing scientific break through, but his genius lacked finding, which led to him stealing money from his father, ultimately ending with his father taking his own life. However, Jack didn't let this impede his research, he had come too far to quit, and eventually he finally became invisible. He mailed off his books on his research and began looking for places to stay, finding Iping as a new abode, using a disguise to appear visible. The people of the village  Jack off-putting to the point they began impeding in Jack's business. Jack, tired of the pestering,  shedded his clothes, and began wreaking havoc on the town. Jack soon sought help from some man he found just outside town: Thomas Marvel. After a crime spree, Thomas ran off with the money, which angered Jack enough to follow everywhere Thomas went in order to kill him. During the altercation he was shot, with him going to find his old schoolmate Doctor Kemp afterwards. Kemp was amazed by Jack's Invisibility, and Jack wished for Kemp to assist him in ending the people that vexed him so. Kemp warned officers of the whereabouts of the invisible man however, and Jack swore he'd kill Kemp for this betrayal. Whether he succeeded there or failed in his attempt, all of his misdeeds caught up to him, resulting in the invisible man's death at the hands of a mob.

Equipment

Light

Death Note

The Death Note is Light's main tool to dispense his justice. By writing someone's name they will die, which sounds simple on the surface, but is much more complex in actuality. You must write the name and think of the person's face, with the added restriction of only killing humans. The Death Note may also affect other people's lives as long as they don't die and is plausibly able to happen, as the Death Note's kills do need to be reasonable. Other than that, the death can be whatever is written, otherwise it's just a heart attack. The Death Note also has the added bonus of allowing the user to see and hear their respective Shinigami, with Light's being Ryuk. For more specific penalties, the Death Note is lost, you must retrieve it in 490 days or else you'll lose ownership. Even more consequentially, if two Death Note owners write the same name at the same time, the Death Note will fail, and the victim will survive, with the same thing occuring if a name is incorrectly written four times. But that's not all, as with the low low price of half your lifespan, you can trade your own eyes for Shinigami eyes, letting you see a person's name and time of death if you see the head to the nose unobscured. Although it should be noted that Light's ego and ideals makes it uncharacteristic for him to actually use this. For availability, Light can have people borrow the Death Note, though selling will cause death. Light also has a small piece of the Death Note in his watch, which follows the same rules.

Jack Griffin

Invisibility Serum

Being made with advanced scientific research, this is what gives Jack his iconic invisibility in the movie. Though its not exactly stable, having added side effects that make people go insane. Due to the portability of the item, as well as an easy means of injection, Jack could theoretically bestow invisibility on other people, with a notable chance of inflicting madness.

Revolver

Taken off somebody trying to kill him, this revolver is a fairly standard handgun, though that doesn't make it any less effective.

Books

These books are the only potential link to the invisible man's true identity. These books are highly complex in nature, filled with advanced mathematics, ciphers, and seperate languages, such as Greek and Russian. In order to preserve his identity, Jack ensures that these books are particularly private.

Disguise

In order to walk amongst normal people without instantly being noticed, or people just ending up very confused at a disembodied voice, Jack has his timeless disguise. It is said to not let a single part of Jack's invisible body be in any way percieved, covering his entire body. In order to maximize the human facade, hair and a nose are also added to the outfit.

Abilities

Light Yagami

Physical Abilities

Although this is an intelligence fight, it's still important to know a combatant's physical prowess. In terms of athleticism, Light can match L in a game of tennis, who's quite the skilled player. He's also shown to be a solid fighter, dishing out and withstanding kicks from L. On a higher end, Light can also keep up with Ryuk who could seemingly fly from Japan to America in a short time, although considering Shinigami's having an innate superiority to humans, Light may not fully match. Light is also surprisingly durable, getting up from multiple gunshots, despite the apparent wounds.

Transmutation

Is it actually Transmutation? Probably not. Is it funny to say it is? Yes.

Jack Griffin

Invisibility

Jack's titular Invisibility is frequently proven to be very useful. Coming from very intricate sciences well above man's current capacity, such as stemming from the fourth dimension, Jack is completely translucent, letting him sneak up on basically anyone, using such imperceptiblility to land attacks and dodge blows with ease.

Fear

Jack has shown a consistent ability to instill great fear into people, such as causing havoc people can't even explain or being frightening to an extent that those in his presence fall ill and faint in fear.

Physical Abilities

Jack is a killer, and a skilled one at that. He's described as a muscular man, and achieved feats well above any average person, such as uprooting lamps, smashing chairs in twain, killing people in seconds through sheer physical force, and is durable enough to take a shot from a bullet, as well as the bite of a dog being incapable of breaking his skin. Outside of sheer strength or durabillity, Jack is incredibly fast, moving at such a pace that he outsped people's eyesight.

Allies

Light Yagami

Misa

Misa is a girl absolutely obsessed with Light, and while she's not exactly as bright as Light, she does have one upside, holding the power of Shinigami eyes, which gives Light most of the benefits of that deal without having to make it himself.

Police Force

After L's death, Light was in charge of the task force that was tasked with finding Kira, with the force being exceptional at their job.

Ryuk

Ryuk is undeniably the strongest ally Light has, considering how he hails from a higher dimensions, is completely invisible to everyone else, can phase through objects, posseses the Shinigami eyes, and can kill anyone with his Death Note, even able to sacrifice himself to save Light...too bad Ryuk is the most unhelpful and uncaring being Light knows, even killing Light at the end of the series.

Teru Mikami

As a worshipper of Kira, Teru has his own Death Note to act as Kira himself, working for Light. He's also a prosecutor, operating on a consistent schedule, and writing entire pages of names.

Jack Griffin

Thomas Marvel

Thomas was by no means a genius, bit he served his purpose in being a visible target to distract from the invisible man that terrorized the populous.

Doctor Kemp

Kemp was Jack's old schoolmate, and before ratting him out, he was a great help in giving Jack food and shelter, as well as assisting him figure out a multitude of problems. Kemp is also almost as intelligent as Jack, able to realize very minor changes, like the depression of someone briefly sitting on something.

Feats

Light Yagami

Deduction
  • His deduction skills are considered good by L, who is the world's greatest detective comparable to seven intelligence agencies and five ordinary investigative  bureaus
  • Discovered other Death Note users after having his memories of the Death Note wiped
  • Deduces where a new Kira is after a memory wipe
  • Realizes his own plan to forget he's Kira and pass the power to someone else to eventually come back to him, as well as figuring out L's thought process
  • Deduced there were hidden cameras in his room
Deception
  • His own father didn't believe he was Kira
  • L heavily suspected, yet wasn't sure Light was Kira
  • Made fake rules in the Death Note in order to evade suspicion
  • Hid a miniature TV inside his chip bag
  • Read lewd mags while being watched to throw people off his trail
  • Convinced an FBI agent that he wasn't Kira and to give him his badge
Miscellaneous
  • Stated he has plans for everything
  • Can hack
  • Killed L
  • Made the FBI get out of Japan
  • Convinced a former FBI agent to reveal her real name to him
  • Made a mechanism to set the Death Note ablaze if someone tries to take it from his desk
  • Hid pencil lead in his door to know if anyone comes in his room
  • Is bilingual
  • Topped a college exam
  • Great at tennis

Jack Griffin

Deduction
  • A skilled investigator
  • Stalked Kemp for hours without being caught
  • States he can track Kemp wherever he goes
  • Easily figured out the people of Iping were investigating him

Deception
  • Kemp, a friend of his who can notice minor depressions in seats, couldn't figure out Jack was the invisible man even after being told
  • An entire mob of cops were completely baffled, and had nothing for finding Jack
  • Can be completely undetectable while following people and being examined, even holding in sneezes
  • Made it so not a single person knew about his research into invisibility
  • People looking into him are in infinite perplexity

Miscellaneous
  • Figured out invisibility, something stated to be impossible and containing infinite details, requiring knowledge in fourth dimensionality  molecular physics, and took thousands of tries to perfect
  • His invisibility is said to be able to take over the world, and nations would chomp at the bit to get invisible armies
  • Emptied an entire room filled with complex gadgets before people could open a door, all while still figuring out and woozy from his invisibility
  • Is trilingual
  • Superior to kemp whose mind went through "the time dimension"

Weaknesses

Light Yagami

The Death Note has very clear limitations; if Light doesn't get a name and a face for his target, he's really screwed, the Shinigami eyes half his life span, the Death Note requires 40 seconds to kill someone, and he can't kill people in unreasonable ways or kill them through side effects of another kill. Although a genius, Light does have his faults too, being incredibly prideful, with him assuming his superiority and having faith in his plans even if their failure will cost him everything. Add in Ryuk's unhelpfulness and many of his other alloes not exactly being on the same level of his intelligence and it's safe to say Light's "perfect victory" isn't exact flawless.

Jack Griffin

Although his invisibility is a great asset, it doesn't necessarily make him completely untrackable. If covered in substances like snow he can be seen, as well as his foot prints being perceptible if he's not careful where he steps. His blood will be visible if dried, and stuff like food he eats or smoke in his lungs will be temporarily visible. But his visibility isn't all that's up to question, as Jack may have a bit of egotism and a dash of anger issues. He will rage hard if anything ticks him off, and while this can be advantageous, it's also gotten him into trouble on multiple occasions. Add in the fact his allies tend to backstab him, and the man who's truly free may be more limited than he lets on.

Verdicts

Intelligence

When it comes to pure deductive abilities, Light should have Jack beat. While Jack can track down Kemp, Light Can figure out his own convoluted plans while mind wiped, and many other impressive showings, such as his comparability to L. On the other hand, deception is a different story. Sure, L didn't find Light out, but it's its important to note that L suspected Light heavily, even since what was basically first sight. L's problem was  confirmation that light was Kira, something he needs as a detective solving a case, not something a serial killer needs, as Jack would be content mowing through countless could be Kiras until he gets the real one. That's not to say Light is obvious, he went to great lengths tricking many investigators, and even just evading L on an evidence level is extremely impressive, but Jack is a complete mystery man, from Kemp not believing Jack could be the invisible man when outright told to making fools of police forces by just goofing around, even going through extensive means to ensure no one knew of his research, with all that said it's safe to say Jack is superior in hiding. When it comes to other forms of intelligence, Jack is another clear winner. Light is an excellent student, and much smarter than an average person, but Jack can figure out the impossible and comprehend infinite details, doing procedures beyond our modern scientific capabilities, much less when the story took place.

Equipment/Abilities/Allies

Alright let's get this out of the way first, can the Death Note work on Jack? As Jack has no face, shouldn't Light be unable to use the Death Note, because the user have to imagine the victim's face to use it? One possible counter to this is that because Death Note users can see Shinigami who are invisible, Light should be able to similarly see Jack. Although it sounds solid in theory, this has many flaws. For one, Jack's invisibility and the imperceptiblility of Shinigami have completely different explanations, and secondly is that a Death Note user can only see the Shinigami tied to their Death Note or one tied to a Death Note they've touched, meaning that being a Death Note owner doesn't make you just see anything invisible. But that doesn't mean Light is completely out, as another argument you could make is that Jack's face being invisible means Light just has to imagine the non-face or his face pre invisibility, as the Death Note doesn't specify their current face. For reference, most people Light kills have mugshots taken probably at least days prior to their death he's going off. So luckily for Light, the Death Note should still be viable. Since that was a lot, let's try and wrap the rest quickly. Disguise counters Shinigami eyes, Jack consistently outsmarts people like the police task force with ease, the books are too complex for light to realistically solve in any reasonable time, although his pride may make him get stuck on that, Ryuk is unhelpful, fear is a huge disadvantage to Light and could potentially convince one of the task force officers to work for Jack, guns took out Light before Death Note could potentially set Jack up into an area where he'll get visible via the fact it can affect people outside the target, and transmutation is funny but unhelpful.

Tertiary Factors

Although abnormally strong for a teenager, Light is massively outclassed by the Invisible Man, who can break apart objects, walk off bullets, kill people in seconds, and moves faster than eyesight. It should be noted that Light wouldn't actually go for physical combat, however.

Conclusion

Kira

Advantages:
  • Better at deduction
  • Death Note has no set range
  • More reliable and reliable help
  • Death Note can help get Jack in a good setting for Light even without having knowing his name

Disadvantages:
  • Has no realistic ways to connect the invisible man and Jack
  • His pride could get him stuck on decoding the books, which he feasibly cannot
  • Impeded by Jack's fear inducement
  • Ryuk is unhelpful

The Invisible Man

Advantages:
  • Has practically no leads back to him
  • Stealth lets him collect information without being caught
  • Fear inducement is a massive advantage
  • More book smart and scientifically intelligent
  • Outstats Light, meaning once he gets to Light the kill will be easy
  • May kill Light just because he's a cop to make sure he's not caught

Disadvantages:
  • Worse at deduction
  • Isn't immune to the Death Note
  • Anger issues may cause issues

This was a particularly interesting one, Light was better at figuring stuff out, yet Jack was better at keeping hidden, but at the end of the day, with his superior stats, his abilities to take out almost everything the other had, and the just plane scare factor all meant he man that's truly free tore down God's new world, and replaced it with one frightened to death. The winner is....

The Invisible Man
